Microplastics and micropollutants often enter our waters unnoticed and cause considerable damage to our ecosystem. To prevent their spread and ensure reliable compliance with future regulations, we identify the challenges that threaten water quality at an early stage. This allows risks to be identified early on and minimized in a targeted manner.
Using our screnning method, we enable fast and cost-effective detection of microplastic hotspots using a fluorescence technique. This method is suitable for initial site assessments, comparative studies, and monitoring of inputs before detailed analyses are carried out.

TyreWearMapping
In collaboration with the Fraunhofer Institute for Environmental, Safety, and Energy Technology (UMSICHT), we developed a model for mapping tire wear, TyreWearMapping, for the Paderborn region in 2024. An interactive map that visualizes hotspots of tire wear and microplastic emissions!
The study in the city and district of Paderborn provides important insights into the distribution and intensity of tire wear as a source of microplastics.
Based on a GIS-supported model that integrates traffic data, road types, speeds, and a gradient curvature data, total emissions were calculated and hotspots identified.
By quantifying this emissions data, measures can be planned in a targeted manner, their effectiveness proven, reporting requirements fulfilled, and efficient solutions for reducing emissions identified.
